Building Maccabiah Stars

Developing athletic skills and connecting to Jewish heritage—all in one amazing summer program!

  • 16 July, 2024

Over 1,000 campers from Pennsylvania, Maryland, Massachusetts, and Florida participated this summer in the inaugural Maccabiah Camp Experience, a unique program that combines sports excellence with Jewish identity.

During this meaningful day filled with excitement and learning, the campers actively participated in the traditional opening torch ceremony, as well as in a variety of sports clinics led by top athletes - Nofar Shalom (Israeli basketball star), Nuriel Lewin (Uruguayan soccer ace), Caren Lesser (USA karate champion), Liza Phillips (USA rugby powerhouse), and Eyal Hakim (USA rugby standout). They improved their skills and absorbed knowledge from the best!

"Our hope is to one day see some of these youth as participants in future Maccabiah Games", Amir Gissin, CEO of MWU.

The Maccabiah Camp Experience also offered fascinating lectures about the rich history of the Maccabiah, culminating in an exciting medals ceremony. Each camper received a token to remember this special event and their connection to the Maccabiah legacy.

"The Maccabiah Camp Experience is part of the Maccabi World Union's effort to encourage the love of sports within the Jewish community and strengthen the intersection of Judaism and sports throughout the Diaspora", Amir Gissin concluded.

Reflecting on the experience, Lior Witlin, Maccabi USA’s Shlicha (“Emissary”), shared: “Watching campers light the torch together and sing the Maccabiah song was a moment I will cherish. This summer marks the beginning of spreading the spirit of the Maccabees and the Maccabiah across Jewish communities globally".
